AI Won't Fix Your CRM. Here's What Actually Will.
by Jeffrey D'Entremont on Jul 31, 2026, 8:07:18 AM
Right now, someone is telling your board that AI is the answer.
Maybe it's a vendor. Maybe it's a peer who just rolled something out. Maybe it's the general pressure in the air that says every revenue team needs an AI story by next quarter. They're not entirely wrong — but they're skipping the one part that decides whether any of it works.
So let me say the thing most people selling you AI won't.
AI doesn't fix operational chaos. It accelerates it.
Point a smart model at dirty data and a vague idea of who your customer is, and you don't get insight. You get confident, automated, wrong answers — faster and at greater scale than your team could ever produce them by hand.
A bad process didn't become a good process because you automated it. It became a bad process that runs at machine speed. The follow-up that went to the wrong segment now goes to the wrong segment instantly, to ten times as many people. The forecast built on data you didn't trust is now generated for you, with a tidy confidence score attached, which makes it more dangerous, not less.
AI is an amplifier. It makes whatever you already have louder. If the foundation underneath it is broken, AI doesn't quiet the problem — it turns it up.
What "AI-ready" actually means
"AI-ready" isn't a software purchase. It's a state your operation is either in or it isn't.
It means three things are true before you deploy anything:
Your data is clean — the records the AI learns from and acts on actually reflect reality. Your ICP is clear — the system knows who you're for, so it can tell a good-fit signal from noise. And your processes are defined — there's a real workflow to automate, not a vague habit that lives in three people's heads.
When those three things are true, AI stops being a gamble and becomes exactly what it was promised to be. When they're not, AI is just a very expensive way to be wrong with more conviction.
This isn't anti-AI. It's pro-AI-that-works.
Foundation-first doesn't mean wait. It doesn't mean AI is hype, or that you should sit out while competitors move. It means sequence it correctly.
AI is a multiplier, and the only question that actually matters is what you're multiplying. Multiply a clean, well-understood revenue engine and you get leverage you can feel in the pipeline. Multiply chaos and you get more chaos, on a faster clock, with a bigger bill.
The teams that win with AI over the next two years won't be the ones who moved first. They'll be the ones who built the foundation first — and then moved fast, on top of something solid.
Build the foundation. Then turn AI loose.
If you're feeling the pressure to "do something with AI," the most strategic move isn't to deploy. It's to find out whether the ground underneath it will hold.
Let's look at your foundation before you build on it. Book a meeting and we'll walk through where your CRM, your data, and your processes actually stand — and what has to be true before AI becomes an advantage instead of a liability.
